What $10,000 of Final Expense Insurance Costs by Age
Final expense insurance (also called burial insurance) is a small whole life policy that is meant to pay for a funeral and other end-of-life bills. These are our starting rates for $10,000 of coverage, non-tobacco, in good health.
| Your age | From about, per month | About per year (monthly x 12) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | $24 | $288 |
| 60 | $32 | $384 |
| 70 | $53 | $636 |
| 80 | $98 | $1,176 |
These are starting rates ("from about"), as of October 2026. Your rate depends on your exact age, your health, the carrier and the amount of coverage. The final premium is set by the carrier after a short application. Estimates only.
What Changes Your Rate
- Your exact age. Each year older costs a little more. The table shows ages 50, 60, 70 and 80, so a 65-year-old will land between the 60 and 70 rows.
- Your health. The rates above are for good health. Some health conditions raise the price or change which plans you can get.
- Tobacco use. The rates above are for non-tobacco. Tobacco users pay more.
- The carrier. Companies price final expense differently, which is why we compare more than one for you.
- How much coverage you buy. The rates above are for $10,000. Other amounts, such as $5,000, $15,000 or $20,000, may not scale in a straight line, so ask for a quote at the amount you want.
- The type of policy. Some plans ask a few health questions. Guaranteed-acceptance plans ask none, and some of them pay a reduced benefit for natural causes during the first two years.
What Does a Funeral Cost?
The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) surveys funeral homes across the country. In its 2023 General Price List Study, the most recent set of cost figures we could find from NFDA, the national median costs were:
| Type of funeral | National median cost |
|---|---|
| Funeral with viewing and burial | $8,300 |
| Funeral with viewing and cremation | $6,280 |
Those figures leave out the cemetery plot, the grave marker or monument, and extras such as flowers and an obituary, so the full bill is usually higher. Prices also differ from one funeral home to the next.
For a rough sense of scale: a $10,000 policy is $1,700 more than the $8,300 national median for a funeral with viewing and burial. That is why we show $10,000 as the starting point. You can choose more if you also want to cover the cemetery costs or other final bills.
